Homeschooling wasn't anything either of us had ever been around nor did either of us intend to school our daughter that way. Back when I was a Purchasing Manager for a downtown pharmacy newsletter company, my 9 month old daughter was calling the babysitter mommy because she was with her 11 hours out of the day and only with me 3 hours at night. My husband quickly put his foot down and requested that I stay home with her. It sounded fun in the beginning. :) It didn't take long for me to begin being discontent with "staying at home". When she was 2 I decided we needed some time apart so I enrolled her in a preschool where they weren't just babysitters or it wasn't just a place for her to come and play while I shopped...I wanted her to actually LEARN things (you know, things that I didn't really desire to teach her like how to read, write, etc :) She was in preschool 3 days a week until she graduated at age 5.
We were so excited for her to start kindergarten, she had done really well in preschool and learned everything she needed to know so there were no concerns about her abilities. We really wanted her to go to a private Christian school - we were looking at Providence Christian Academy & Life Christian School. We attended an open house at PCA and my husband thought the kids learning abilities were unbelievable but that they all looked unhappy in being there so we signed her up at Life Christian school. We had met with the principal and everything was set for her to begin in the fall.
In June of that year God began speaking to me about homeschooling...I didn't even know HOW it was done but we started praying about it and realized that is the way the Lord wanted us to go so we called Life and canceled our commitment for that school year. I kind of thought maybe we'd homeschool for Kindergarten and we'd be able to put her in for 1st grade...so far, that hasn't been God's plan.
I've been a "reluctant" homeschooler, not doing it of my own free will but doing it because it is what we feel God has called us to. There was an entire year that I literally threw fits around the house about continuing it. God is so good though and his mercy is new every morning. I am SO thankful that God put us on this journey, our daughter is (yes) a social butterfly with people of ALL ages, she's VERY intelligent, kind, caring and loves the Lord.
Ultimately, it is our goal to homeschool her all the way to the end but we will pray and let the Lord lead us as he sees fit.
